Excellent story. This is one of the best books I've read in years. It is partly a multi-layered murder mystery and partly just a fantastic story of a boy growing up in the small town of Zephyr in the 60's. The writing is outstanding.

If you would like too many unresolved stories in one book then this is your jam.
medium-paced

This is the ultimate "kids in the south during the civil rights movement" American tale, with horror/sci-fi/fantasy elements of the Steven Spielberg-y variety and all kinds of neat little myths that come in and out of the plot. It's the last one I'll ever need, and I wish I'd had it sooner. As much as I understand the love for this type of story, it's ready to be retired, I think.

Definitely a page turner. I love the nostalgic vibes and the incorporation of magic and the supernatural with real life terrors. I felt somewhat alienated by it as a gay man because it’s so heteronormative centric. I understand it’s about a small southern town in the 1960s, but even in the epilogue Corey says things like “They had no children, though they were still happy” and talks about his daughter’s tomboy “phase” and says it’s “fine for now.” It could have been better if it didn’t focus so much on having children and a traditional family, because it implies that anything else is lacking in some way.

Wow, Robert McCammon finally hits his mark, after thousands of pages of near-misses and almost-theres. Yes, it's a bit long, and he wanders at times, but, come on, nobody's perfect.

Beautiful in every way

I read this book in high school and really liked it but as an adult with kids of my own, it was so much deeper and richer. This book is a gift.

This book is absolutely amazing. One of the best I've ever read. It's classic, and some could say that there are cliches, but it's so well done and has so much meaning behind it all that the reader can easily look past them.
