Boy's Life

I really wanted to like this book because I enjoyed Swan Song and the reviews for this were good. But it didn’t move at the pace that I wanted and the elements that drew me in at the start—a mysterious death, a monster—just didn’t appear often enough for me.

It is definitely written well and an engaging coming of age story but just not what I was in the mood to read. I may revisit it again to just enjoy the pace and writing but for now, it’s a DNF.

This is an excellent book on so many levels! Exquisite prose, unique and engaging characters, a baffling mystery, a portrait of life in a small southern town in 1964. The pages hold wonder, humor, terror, ugliness, harsh realities amid nostalgia, magical realism, friendship and love and the small joys of everyday life. This story will stick with me for a long time.

Well written, but I simply didn't feel anything. Didn't care about the characters, and at some point I realized I don't care how it all ends.

I'd give this 5½ stars if I could, but I can't, because Goodreads doesn't let you do half stars.

McCammon is known for his horror ( I also recommend his Swan Song), but this book is so, SO much more. While it does contain elements of horror, there is just so much here about growing up in a small town and all the craziness that entails. I found myself stopping at certain points and remembering some of the insane things I remembered growing up as a young boy in the rural South. I think it is safe to say that this book tugged at my heart strings in several different places. I have read this book twice, and the 2nd read through felt like I was sitting down with an old friend. It is such an amazing piece of writing and storytelling. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I only hope you enjoy it half as much as I do.

A very sweet and light exploration of what it must have been like to grow up as a boy in the '60's. McCammon did a great job making me like and care about the characters. The plot seemed almost like an afterthought, but the characters carried the book for me. I'd put the book in the same category as It and The Body by Stephen King and Summer of Night by Dan Simmons, though it was not as good as either of those books. Still, a fun read and I enjoyed it.
