Not a book, but a short story. I found it difficult to read because it emphasizes the reluctance to stop seeing “the other” - the inability to allow people to be who they are without creating comfortable, homogeneous boxes. Well written, with a well-developed central character but, much like the world we live in today, the story just allows the character to be and to be justified in her being. The instruments of epiphany and change literally lay all around her, but remain untouched and unused. And maybe that’s the point, that the story hit a battered and bruised nerve. I really wanted to hate this story, but it serves a thought-provoking purpose.
