so... stanton is an asshole. but also a good guy. many people are being harsh with him in the reviews, but he’s just oblivious. And Sophia is awesome and doesn’t deserve any of the harsh comments here. Anyway - reading the reviews before reading this book was a bad idea and this book is actually real good

This story is one of the typical, you don't know what you have until you lose it.

Stanton and his high school sweetheart, Jenny have a child together. They agreed that he would not give up his chance on becoming a big-time lawyer and although they were in love that they were both free to see other people when he was away.
However, when he becomes a bigshot, he realises too late that he has been away too long and that Jenny is getting married to someone else. He is furious.

But he really has no right to be furious because he has been having friends with benefits relationship with his partner Sofia. They have very steamy sex and they have become some sort of comfort for each other. He invites Sofia to follow him back home for Jenny's wedding hoping that he would crash the wedding and they would get back together. Unfortunately for Sofia, she realises that she has been in love with Stanton the whole time and following him back home to crash the wedding of the woman he loves was too much for her.

I really enjoy this book but I have to say that did almost DNF it.

Title: Overruled
Author: Emma Chase
Genre: Romance
Series: Book #1: The Legal Briefs Series
RD: April 28, 2015
Source: ARC
Rating: 4.5 stars

The official synopsis of Overruled:

“A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing—with his southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him. Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan. Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved ten-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married—to someone who isn’t him. That’s definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits,” begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely. What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana? The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.”

I am so glad that Emma Chase is embarking on a new romance series after her rousing success with the Tangled Series. We are introduced to three successful, charismatic, and handsome men who are all meeting their match in three equally successful, career-driven, and beautiful women. First up is defense attorney Staton Shaw who is going toe-to-toe with his equally impressive leading lady, female counterpart, Sofia Santos.

Aside from the fact that Staton is a driven attorney who is devoted to his daughter, I love the fact that Emma chose to give Jenny and Sofia a relationship that wasn’t catty or involved too much female bitchiness. The story could have detoured into catty female competition route considering that Sofia is very much aware that Jenny and Staton not only have a history together but also a daughter. It was refreshing to read that Sofia and Jenny recognized each other’s roles in different periods of Stanton’s life and accepting of each other and are able to be friends. I love that Sofia is confident in herself and her career and wasn’t threatened by Jenny and ultimately captured Stanton’s heart (and vice-versa).

Overall it was a very enjoyable read. I love we got introduced to Jake and Brent (who will have their in

This book was a lot of fun. Full of humor, tears, childhood emotions and romance, and scorching hot scenes, Emma Chase has started a series sure to please everyone. Stanton and Jenny, in love since they were 12 found themselves as parents at 17. Stanton went off to college and though through technology kept in contact with Jenny, never really came back. 11 years later, Jenny's impending marriage triggers a series of events and emotions with Stanton. Will Sophia, his colleague and friend with benefits be able to help him through? The supporting cast of JD, Brent and Jake bring fun and warmth to the story, as well as Grammy who is just brilliant.

Jason Carpenter and Charlotte Penfield narrate this book. Loving Jason's southern drawl in this story, you can't help, but love the self centered Stanton. Charlotte gives Sophia a warm and emotional personality that makes you route for this couple. They make an incredible narration team.

Read Legal Briefs #2 first, which featured the couple in this romance in minor roles. Was intrigued enough to want to go back and read their story, so I picked this one up.

Unlike SUSTAINED (Legal Briefs #2), OVERRULED is told from both the hero & the heroine's POVs, although more so from the former's than from the latter's. Alabama boy Stanton goes off to college, law school, and then a defense attorney practice in DC, leaving his high school sweetheart, and their daughter, behind (at high school sweetheart's insistence). They decide not to marry, but Stanton always pictures high school sweetheart as "his" girl, happy to bonk her whenever he goes home. And happy to bonk any other sexy woman who happens to cross his path in DC (because high school sweetheart told he she thought they should be free to see other people when they were apart, and he, dumb guy, believed her). Stanton's been getting it on of late with fellow lawyer Sofia, a lawyer just as driven, and just as busy with work to not want a romantic relationship, as he is. But when Stanton hears that his hometown girl is getting married, he immediately rushes home—with Sofia in tow, because she's so good at keeping him from blowing his cool.

This is a comedy, so we are supposed to laugh at just how clueless Stanton is about his own feelings, and about the feelings of both Sofia and his high school sweetheart. Which I did, a lot. Didn't find it so easy to laugh at Sofia, though, who rationalizes and rationalizes continuing to sleep with Stanton while they travel to Alabama
Spoiler and even after they arrive
,even while knowing that he's intent on throwing a wrench into his not-quite-ex's wedding plans. Both characters are drawn with sympathy, though; we're not supposed to just laugh at them; we're supposed to empathize with their cluelessness, and to like them. A bit difficult to do, despite Chase's strong writing.

What fantasy is this romance fulfilling? The fantasy that a guy who so compartmentalizes sex and love can get over his madonna/whore thing and come to love the sexy girl who initially just got into it with him for the sexy times.
