Upon rereading as a grown adult woman, I find Becky totally ridiculous, and also Suze to be an idiot???? But, I still really like Becky and Luke, so. :|
Yes, I can probably relate to some of the main character...she likes to shop and isn't stellar with money but I still don't think I'm as bad as Becky. Definitely one of my fav series...though they get a bit more unrealistic as they go.
This book was nothing but an exercise in frustration. The main character had no redeeming qualities whatsoever and I'm disappointed that the time I spent reading this book is time I won't ever get back!

This was just not the book for me. I could not relate to the main character. She was so frustrating to hear tell the story, and I just could not get on board with her behavior and the justification that she tried to have. Each time she went into trying to talk herself through an event, I just found myself rolling my eyes.
While this book was light and entertaining, it took an inordinately long time for me to read, mostly because it took the main character a long time to do anything that made me remotely root for her. She is shallow, self-centred, and vain, and I found her completely unlikeable until at least halfway through the novel. So, while I laud the author for making a character I believed so much I wanted to smack her on almost every page, the first 1/4 of the book was a major slog. If I hadn't already seen the movie and known that I enjoyed that, I probably wouldn't have stuck with it.
On the plus side, the author does a fabulous job of showing what shopping addiction looks like. On the down side, I also didn't find the character's arc to truly deal with her shopping addiction, though she had made some small progress by the end. They handled it much better in the movie. Maybe the script writers were compressing several books'-worth of character arc into the film, but I don't intend to read another book in the series to find out.
It's not often I recommend a movie over the book, but my bottom line: watch the movie, which is plotted and written much more tightly than the book, with a character you care about from the beginning. Then spend your reading time on something else. Perhaps one of Ms. Kinsella's books in other series, because I'm sure her other characters (and later plotting) are as enjoyable to spend time with as her light, witty prose.

Quick and fun book that was a nice break from some of the heavier books I've been reading lately.
I absolutely hate to say this, but the movie is better. A 1000x better. If you like the movie don't read this. If you might ever want to watch the movie don't read this.
This version of Rebecca Bloomwood is such a juvenile brat, and I should know cause I have personally had that be my entire personality before, and even I found her to be insufferably naive.
