I really feel like I have no idea what to rate this. I really liked I think it was until about 70% but then I started liking it less and less toward the end. We were always kind of distant from the characters with more of an omnipresent narrator but the moments we dropped in on characters were really impactful and good at making us love them or appreciate them. But towards the end it started to change. It's a patriarchal world but we had the main character who didn't care about gender but efficiency. And we had some strong female characters. But then starting with the his wife supporting him having multiple wives so he can be powerful. I hate all of that. And the setting up of a clear future with the typical backstabbing and manipulation with the wives. I'm really not looking forward to what will happen in this dynasty if it's going to be a bunch of that. But all of the moments towards the end in general with our characters felt much less endearing or sweet or emotional or impactful and I just didn't care as much. But I had been really interested to see what was going to happen for the majority of the book so... Confused

The plot is good and the ideas grand, but the book keeped pulling me out of the story and making me think „that is a bit convenient/ridiculous“.

This follows the events of the warring state period a little too closely. To the point that if you know Chinese history you pretty much know what's gonna happen. And if you do a search of the figure a character corresponds to, there's a high chance you'll find a Wikipedia article telling you line by line what that character's gonna do
