I thought I was over pirate stories, turns out I am not.

I have to admit that what first brought me to this book was the cover. It is just stunning. The hair, the freckles, the hidden ship in her eye… everything! And I particularly love how the cover to the sequel “Namesake” complements this one. After that, I had heard so many good things about this book that I had to read it. I am so glad I did because I could not put it down. Thankfully, I had a nice snowy Sunday to stay at home and read all day.

The story follows Fable, a seventeen-year-old, trying to take what was promised to her. Fable is a strong, smart, and reliable character so it’s really hard not to fall in love with her. She’s lived a rough life and still never gives up which is just really inspiring. I also really liked the side characters. Some of them may be more developed than others but I still enjoyed their strong sense of camaraderie.

When it comes to the world, I definitely felt transported to the Narrow seas. Her descriptions of the salty smell in the air made me miss my hometown and dipping my toes in the Mediterranean Sea. While I love the mountains where I live, I’m so far inland that sometimes I feel a little claustrophobic. This book allowed me to escape and dream for as long as it lasted. I cannot wait to get back to this world in March when Namesake gets released.

I really enjoyed this book! I found it similar to “The Daughter of the Pirate King” series but I enjoyed this series even more! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I enjoyed this much more than I initially thought I would. YA can be a bit hit or miss for me, but the author creates such an intriguing world of pirates, high seas and adventure that this didn't even feel like YA while reading it.

Onto book 2 :)

So good!! Honestly I haven't read a fantasy/adventure book like this since I was in grade school when I used to love the genre (and then I guess I grew out of it??? Idk high school and college reading curriculum and "for fun" reading just never contained books from the genre) but oh boy did this transport me back to my childhood love of pirates and adventure and books like this!!!! The adventure, the heroine, all of it was spectacular. Its like pirates of the Caribbean meets... a more mature dark hills divide?? (Wow childhood throwback). And as someone who is obsessed with pirates of the Caribbean, I was obsessed with this book. And now I want to dive fully into the series and the YA adventure genre, just as fully as Fable dives into the sea. I don't care if I'm almost 30. I'm going to get the sequel from the library tomorrow. Can't believe it took Reese Witherspoon for this to end up on my to be read list. The only thing that keeps this from getting a 5 star is the ending.

The characters are too flat for me. The romance lacked any kind of punch because there was no build up. Nothing that showed WHY they were in love. We don’t even really see their personalities.

There was so much to explore with the Fable and Saint relationship but that went NOWHERE. My assumption is that we learn more on the sequel but idk if I liked this enough to bother with the sequel.

Easy one to listen to while I worked. Will definitely check out the sequel! I enjoyed the story itself. I felt that the romance was thrown together because it just made sense for the plot. Didn't really feel a romantic connection between the characters
