This book shows the beauty of love stories that so often go untold. The love story of friends and chosen family. This book filled my heart with joy. I loved getting to see these characters love and care for eachother through the hard parts of their life. I loved seeing Fito be welcomed into their loving family. I wish the world had more loving families willing to bring others in. This book captures the thoughts and feelings of many young people and questions we struggle to awnser. I loved the line that said we grow up to be the people we chose, or somthing like that. I liked seeing the main character relize his agency over the person he will be.

Now I usually try to stay away from YA books, since usually the problems the characters have make me roll my eyes. It was the case with this book for most of the reading (which is very fast and also annoyed me a little bit to have chapters that were so short), but the last 20 pages or so gave it some additional stars, as it is very clear how the protagonist actually grows.

I loved Dante and Aristotle and I was worried that this book wouldn't be anywhere near as wonderful. Thankfully it was not disappointing.

Honestly I had to DNF this which I don't do often at all. It was just completely unbearable and I didn't care enough about any of the characters to continue to the end and I had a LOT of problems with what I did read.

There is just something about the way that Saenz crafts his characters and writes their perspectives that just fills my heart to the brim. It’s so pure and human, in the best possible light. I wish everyone thought the way his characters do and felt even a tenth of the emotion they express. While I love Dante and Aristotle more, this book was another glimpse of family, friendship, and love in such a relatable way. You don’t have to have a Hispanic/Latin American background to fall head over heels for these characters and relate to all their struggles and growth. I adored every page of this book and highly recommend.

A warm and thoughtful realistic YA novel about the different shapes that families can take. See my full review here.
