I realized early on that this wasn't a book for me. Maybe if I were more of a gamer, I would have connected to the characters more. I appreciated the main characters being mixed race... I still get a thrill when I see my background represented. Still, Sadie and Sam annoyed me, especially Sadie. It made it really difficult to finish.

Sam and Sadie meet at a children’s hospital in LA (Sam as a patient and Sadie visiting her sister) and quickly bond over their love of video games. They grow up together but have a falling out before leaving for college in Cambridge, where they reconnect. Along with Sam’s friend Marx, they create an instantly successful video game and start their own gaming company. The book follows their creations over 15 years, and Sam and Sadie’s fraught relationship.

I’m still not sure how I felt about this book. It is really critically acclaimed and very well written. It’s imaginative, bringing video games to life on a page. On the other hand, the characters so are flawed that I struggle to root for any of them (except Marx, who is so sweet). But they do grow over time, which redeems them for me. The plot was slow, and yet still gripped me the whole time. This story is more contemporary fiction and drama than sci-fi, and much darker than I expected. ⚠️ TW: Gun violence.

It was ok, but I was a little disappointed in the end. I loved the concept, but it really was about their friendship in the end.

Honestly I didn’t really like this book overall, but I am glad I read it. It just felt super heavy without much reward, making it harder for me to want to engage with. Also I felt like the plot lacked direction/ a point (which maybe *was* the point, given the characters).

As someone in my book club said- it was super frustrating that 80% of the characters’ problems could have been resolved or even avoided if they had basic communication skills.

I hope these characters, in present day culture, are able to go to therapy.

A few things I did like:
1) (Spoiler) I liked that as a reader, I was on parallel journey as Sadie discovering the truth behind Pioneers. Ie, as a reader, I kind of knew deep down from early on that the characters were Sadie and Sam, but you still lean into the uncertainty and feel something more once you realize what’s going on. And then looking back, you’re like oh this was so obvious from the start!

2) I was very fascinated by the author’s deep knowledge of games and gaming. As a reader it was fun to dive into a such a literally technical world I know so little about. I feel like I learned something, or, at least gained an appreciation for the craft of game making.

Random note- I was suprised there wasn’t even mention of Marx’s parents at least trying to reach out to Sadie or even Sam.

Finally, as much as I didn’t necessarily have fun reading this, Tomorrow made me feel something, even if that something wasn’t always good.

Reminded me of an old friend, but was disappointed with a specific trope being used to force the narrative to face old habits
