The premise was interesting, but the execution? Meh. The story didn't seem to really go anywhere. I feel like this was a wasted opportunity, because the mystery in itself was really weak, despite, again, a great premise. But the good thing is the book was very fast-paced and it helped me get out of a reading slump.

Low is a teenage outsider with polyamorous parents who makes friends with Freya, a ceramic artist, who is new to town but when Jamie and her husband move to town she becomes besties with Freya. After Freya and Jamie swap husbands one drunken night Low sets about her revenge.

For the first quarter, I could have sworn I'd read this before but could find no record of it. Then after that point, it diverged from my expectations. (I wonder what book I'd confused it with.) A quick popcorn read. I bit different with all the polyamoury but otherwise your run-of-the-mill one-day-read thriller.

I bought this after reading a recommendation in the Globe and Mail. Initially I expected a very light frothy summer read but it turned out to be better than that, with well developed characters and an interesting plot. It's not literature but it is a fun summer read.

The Swap is a thriller about manipulation and obsession, with a devastating ending. Low is a teenager when she first sees Freya, a beautiful artist. What Low doesn’t realize is that Freya is a user. She uses people, manipulating them to her advantage, and creating jealous feelings in people. Jamie is a friend of Freya’s - they meet when Freya brought her pottery pieces to Jamie’s gift shop to sell.
As Jamie and Freya grow closer, Freya suggests they swap partners. Jamie is horrified, but intrigued, by this idea.
What follows this night is sorrow and horror, with Freya continuing to be a master manipulator. As you read this book, the tension continues to build, you just know something awful is going to happen. However, I don’t think you will guess what actually does happen.
Well done. This book kept me equally interested and horrified as I read the depths of Freya’s manipulation and the obsessive nature of Low and Jamie over their feelings for Freya.

Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the copy of The Swap. My opinions are my own.
