This is a hands-down beautiful book. I happened to start it listening to the Audible recording before I got my copy in the mail, and I’m so glad I was able to listen to it. The recorded performance by the author and other voice actors is fantastic and really amplified my experience. Heartbreaking and mesmerizing modern Americana. I will recommend this book to everyone.
Part 2 was a bit much and kind of ridiculous, but extra credit for the overall way the book was written and writing the "novel within a novel." So I'll give it a 5 instead of 4.
Definitely favorite book of 2020. So beautiful. Where to start. Reading this book was a complete sensory experience. I loved so much the description of the world through the eyes of the mother. So in tune with sound, but in such a poetic way. I also LOVED the field note style in which this was written. Ugh. So good! So much more to be said but my words fail in attempt to describe the beauty of this book.

Interesting structure and concept. A lot of technical terms that went over my head. The second half is a lot more of a simple plot that made it more engaging and readable. Don’t think I would recommend this one widely, but I am curious about the author’s other books.
