beautifully written, with complex, flawed, deeply observed characters. i loved birdie’s voice. lots to say about the presentation and performance of Race as well as a tender look at the process of growing up and the undeniable urge to belong.
i can’t believe this was written in 1999 — it feels perfectly modern.

really liked this one, points off for how slow it was at moments. Wish she had dug more into birdie and cole’s imagined relationship w each other after birdie leaves Boston— birdie def was grieving cole and pictures cole grieving her too but never thinks too deeply about it.
Graphic: Racism, Religious bigotry, and Racial slurs
Moderate: Alcohol, Violence, Bullying, Grief, Antisemitism, and Homophobia
Minor: Suicide
