What an amazing life Danny Trejo leads. Heartbreaking and fascinating insights into crime, prison, family and recovery especially for Mexican Americans, but also for everyone - he seems to tap into some universal truths that apply across the board. As an atheist, I couldn't completely relate to his narrative that God is the answer to recovery but he shows through his actions that actually there is so much more to it than that. Leaving behind a life of crime and drugs took self awareness, an ability to forgive yourself and others and the unique empathic insights that come with helping other people, not just thinking about yourself. Fab recommendation from my book group and I am glad I read it. I hope the book helps as many people as Trejo would want it to!
A really fascinating life! I knew Trejo's story would be wild, but wow, it was really wild. The jumps in chronology were kinda confusing to follow but overall this was solid!
