The book catalogs the events of 1776 which ultimately leads to the creation of the United States.  The author takes a contrarian track by arguing that even after the Declaration of Independence, a large number of colonists would willingly stay a subject of George III.  He cites letters as evidence that many of the Revolutionary War administrators purposely kept the word independence out of official correspondance.  Very informative and brings to lights the multitude of mis-steps made by both sides which makes you realize how easily the war for independence could have been lost.
