A swash-buckling, entertaining thoroughly engaging read in a charming, surprisingly modern style.

On the other hand . . . it glorifies what is essentially gang violence, adultery, vigilantism . . .

I'll go back to it later.

The Musketeers are truly the influencers of 1600s France- gadding about in fancy clothes, getting into public scrapes, inserting themselves into others business, causing chaos with no thought for others, drinking huge amounts, abusing their power, rubbing shoulders with royalty, having no real tasks to do other than run around having affairs, duelling and spending money that doesn't belong to them. Truly the unemployed friends who ask why you can't go for a ride to London and 30 bottles of wine at 2pm on a Tuesday. Gonna be so real, Milady was kind of a girl boss and honestly none of her "crimes" had me bothered enough to really condemn her until the Constance affair. That was not girl power. Love Aramis the slut of a sword fighting monk; Porthos the lazy wine drinking powerful woman seducing destined to be a trophy husband oaf; Athos who is seemingly God on earth or the reincarnation of Alexander the Great/Julius Ceaser/every Greek philosopher/all famously bad husbands etc etc and D'Artagnan a teenager who manages to have enormous amounts of rizz, pre-marital relations, multiple overseas holidays and several encouters with actual diamonds all before actually becoming a titular musketeer.  Moment of silence for the long suffering lackeys. Love the way this story just happens with very little time wasting, just a lot of horse riding, period accurate morals and blood.

I just love this book. The adventures of the four friends in each of the chapters are awesome, everything feels so dynamic!

And ✨THE CHARACTERS✨. Each one is unique and SO well written! from D'Artagnan hilarious and witty humor, Porthos bold courage, Athos father-ly care for his friends, to Aramis cold, calculating and mysterious personality. And then there's Richelieu, Mousqueton, Planchet... I adore them.

Except Milady.
She's an excellent villain.
...But I hate her. She can go feed the ducks or something.

That's a captivating story, masterfully led by Alexandre Dumas, who perfectly knows how to manage the twists and turns so that the story does not identify any lengths. So, we dive into this novel and are fine until the end.
