At this point the comics might actually be better than the show? At least season 3? Remarkably faithful in tone, fun, and well illustrated.

Just like the show.

This is the best of the Rick and Morty trade paperbacks to date (having read the main Rick and Morty trade paperbacks #1-6 and Mr. Poopybutthole #1).

I love that they call out Doctor Who for being a weird creep via parody (the character Peacock Jones). I've always thought that he was a creep (especially the David Tennant instantiation) and been so surprised that more Doctor Who fans aren't bothered by this. Rick and Morty get me though :)

Add to this, some especially solid writing and the return of Mr. Meeseeks! So good.

The only bad thing about this trade is the 5th issue's illustration. Kyle Starks illustrated this issue. While he's great at writing the Rick and Morty comics, his illustration style is so different that it breaks the continuity for me, and I just don't like it in general.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

I received a free copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun graphic novel that fans of the TV show will surely enjoy!

If you're a fan of Rick and Morty there's not a lot you won't like here. It's like another three Rick & Morty Episodes in book form. What's not to like?
