We see the thief preaching against theft, and the adulterer against adultery. We have men sold to build churches, women sold to support the gospel, and babies sold to purchase Bibles for the poor heathen! all for the glory of God and the good of souls! The slave auctioneer's bell and the church-going bell chime in with each other, and the bitter cries of the heart-broken slave are drowned in the religious shouts of his pious master.
What a hauntingly sad book. I read this once a few years back but unfortunately couldn't remember much about its content and I'm afraid that'll happen again, but I'd say it is still a very important read for everyone who is okay with graphic scenes.

Douglass is one of the most talented writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I think taking this in in an academic setting diminished some of my stronger feelings about reading it, but my class also helped me really notice the intricacies of Douglass's language. I definitely want to come back to this at a later date, hopefully alongside another of his biographies for comparison!

I read it in high school in class and it changed me. A very important book of our history and of black voices. Powerful and amazing. Want to read it again.

READ THIS BOOK.
Obviously an absolutely heartbreaking story but written so excellently I couldn’t put it down. Reading his story from his perspective is just something else. It says so much and makes such an impact in so few pages. I genuinely believe everyone should read this book. It should be in every secondary school reading list/syllabus.
