I just wasn’t in the space to read this kind of book

I had to read this for my American lit class but I really enjoyed it. Its about a real life slave who escaped slavery and, while totally gripping, manages to be full of hope and despair at the same time.

Douglass is one of the most talented writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I think taking this in in an academic setting diminished some of my stronger feelings about reading it, but my class also helped me really notice the intricacies of Douglass's language. I definitely want to come back to this at a later date, hopefully alongside another of his biographies for comparison!
