This wasn't bad for under 300 pages. But that doesn't make it good either. The lack of New Orleans background really shines through. There's a lack of community knowledge.
And the characters don't act very local either. Even though they're supposed to. Given the implied history, I'd expect more vulnerability. No mention of sea levels alone makes no sense. Bayous depend on ebb and flow. This would have made more sense in the Okefenokee, or more northern Everglades.
