4.5 stars, rounding up

This is sooo good! Really good plotting and writing with excellent art. Well-done thriller that also tackles some interesting medical moral issues--how/who decides which lives get saved? What happens if a life you save turns out to be evil?

I can say, the beginning of Dr. Tenma's story made so angry at his situation (feel empathy towards him) in a amazing way. I was rooting for him from the beginning and seeing him grow into a confident person was great. This makes the murder mistery that part of the story feel personal to me and made me want to continue to read how Dr. Tenma solves it!

Monster is a slow-burning descent into the darkest corners of the human psyche, where justice and obsession blur into something indistinguishable. It begins with a single act of mercy, a decision that unravels into a slow, methodical nightmare. Urasawa builds tension with surgical precision, pulling the reader through a labyrinth of guilt, identity, and the nature of true evil. His cinematic paneling, stark compositions, and quiet moments of dread make each revelation feel like a slow tightening of the noose.

Dr. Tenma’s pursuit of Johan is not just a chase but a reckoning, a question of whether evil is born or made. Every shadow conceals a secret, every act of kindness holds the risk of betrayal. With every turn of the page, the lines between hero and villain blur, leaving only one unsettling truth, some questions have no answers, only consequences.

Monster does not just ask who the real monster is. It asks again and again, in the eyes of different faces. What lies at the heart of a monster? What does it mean to save a life? What becomes of us when we are consumed by our darkest moments? It repeats until you are left wondering if you ever knew the answer at all.

Thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series. I’m already collecting the rest.

We start being introduced to the characters and setting the tone for the story. Very interesting reading a story set in Germany- I’ve read manga on and off for years and it was just nice to have a slightly different setting. Bit gruesome but its includes murders so that shouldn’t be a surprise.
Absolutely sucked in. It has taken me a while to read as I don’t want to rush through them and with the size of the perfect editions, there is a lot of information to take in. Would highly recommend this if you enjoy manga.
