The start was a bit slow. But once you get through the first half it really gets going and is an engaging read. It has a lot of heart and defines found family.

'Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow' by Jessica Townsend is a magical middle grade book that introduces us to a fantastic heroine and an original new world.
Morrigan Crow is cursed to die. Born on Eventide, she is one of the cursed children that bring mayhem to the world around them and always die before they can grow up. But on Morrigan's eleventh birthday, the very day upon which she is supposed to die, she is whisked away to a magical world called Nevermoor by a strange man named Jupiter North. North brings her to the hotel he owns and which will now be her home as she participates in four trials to try and be awarded a place in the Wundrous Society. If she fails to pass these trials and win a place in the Society, she'll be forced to go home and to an unknown fate.
Townsend creates an imaginative world and populates it with varied and complex characters, most of whom you can't help but love. There are giant talking cats, parades full of witches, and a magical hotel with rooms that will capture your fancy. On top of the world, Townsend also populates her book with complex characters. Morrigan is struggling with what she always assumed was her fate while also trying to figure out what her place is in Nevermoor. Jupiter North is enchanting but mysterious. The Wundersmith, the big bad in this world, is lingering at the edge of the story, possibly creating havoc and definitely bringing up lots of questions for both Morrigan and the reader.
This is such a fun book with a world that is easy to fall head over heels for. I can already see lots of threads being woven for later in the series and I can't wait to see where they lead us. I'll be picking up the second book soon as I want to fall back into the creative and engaging world that Townsend has created.
