I may still DNF this collection, but the stories I liked in it made it worth buying.

There's a lot in the first few to get your teeth into, with the recurring "haunted by the past" theme coming out in different ways. There you have some really interesting concepts and a lot of framed narratives, some good old fashioned Victorian Gothic, and stories I enjoyed.

Others in the collection were more tedious to plough through (for me), but if you like mock-hagiographical stories and themes of saints vs heretics, Divine Providence vs devilry, some as pastiche and some with the darker whimsy of adult fairytales, they might be more to your taste. Some I liked, some I didn't.

I haven't finished the collection yet as I've hit a run of stories that don't interest me, and there are some essays in this collection too that didn't really interest me to begin with, but I might try anyway.

There were some individual stories I'd give 5*s to, others 2-3*s.

I'd recommend it as a whole!
