To whoever reads this book, please do NOT ever let anyome treat you like this. This is the second CoHo book I've read and I'm getting really sick of her romanticizing toxic relationships.

What I liked:
šŸ›©ļø Cap made this book
šŸ›©ļø Fast-paced
šŸ›©ļø Family drama / decent backstory for Miles

What I didn't like:
šŸ”» Miles treats Tate like a doormat
šŸ”»Tate bends to Miles' will
šŸ”»Mike's has a good backstory but NO personality
šŸ”»THE ENDING šŸ˜” like after all that, why?!
šŸ”»Writing style (a good portion of this book is written like poetry, it's very random)
šŸ”»"Say ox" šŸ¤¢ and how many times CoHo used the word liquid

My immediate thought after reading a CoHo book was to get into another one because I like to suffer deep into the night, in the company of my beloved kindle and an annoyingly loud AC as my background music. I'm kidding.

If I were to be honest, I had high expectations for this one especially coming from a great read like It Ends With Us, but my goal is to not compare the two, so I will not.

I'd lie if I said I didn't like Ugly Love because my god did it put me through another emotional wreck, but there were obviously elements that didn't do it for me. Particularly, and most especially, Miles' flashback pov/monologues about Rachel. "My new favorite flavor is Rachel." C-R-I-N-G-E! And as for the other thing I didn't like, it was how much of a pushover Tate was, which I'm pretty sure many felt the same about. It can't just be me?? It was beyond disappointing & almost irritating to know how easily she forgives Miles as if he didn't traumatize her enough.

Miles' redemption at the end was personally more than enough to make it a nice ending. It matters that he tried to get to the bottom of his issues so he can fully give himself to Tate. Ugly love is definitely not CoHo's best work, but another great book nonetheless.

The characters in this book are so well developed as the book continues. The main character miles starts off so closed off and distant and itā€™s hard to really build a connection with him, you begin to think do you like him or hate him, but as the book continues his character unwraps as the author develops the character. The book for sure is a very sad, heart wrenching story and it can hurt to read at times, but the overall theme is hope. And overcoming mental struggles and flaws. I love how the booked ended, hopeful but also honest. It doesnā€™t give you a fairy tell ending because itā€™s not picture perfect but itā€™s perfect enough to be satisfying and beautiful to end on.

Not my favorite Colleen Hoover book but it was still decent. It was a fun read at first but as you think a little more the more you realize it wasnā€™t as great as you think. I just feel like the character traits and growth was inconsistent and that really messed with the plot. For example, (no spoilers donā€™t worry) Miles, one of the main characters used grief and panic as an excuse for many many things that shouldnā€™t have an excuse. Grief is very prominent in this book but other characters simply forgave and moved on. It was never addressed as how badly certain actions hurt others or how people and actions/things needed to change. And this book would have been liked more if that had changed. Other than that I like the two main characters relationship towards the end. But in the beginning again, their relationship felt uncomfortable. Like somehow manipulation or gaslighting was involved, even though it was never directly stated or somewhat brought up. Maybe it was just me that felt uncomfortable by parts of their relationship, but I didnā€™t like many parts of it which made my liking for the book go down. It wasnā€™t a horrible book, just donā€™t one of my favorites.

Things I liked:
ā€¢ The parallels between the past relationship and the current relationship.
ā€¢ The structure of how the past relationship is set out in the chapters.
ā€¢ I actually liked the development of the past relationship more than the current relationship.

Things I didnā€™t like:
ā€¢ The main lead and love interest spent no time together aside from sex before deciding that they loved each other.
ā€¢ Neither character was really special, I felt like I had read the character a million times.
ā€¢ Love interest treated the main lead like shit and was forgiven completely in the end just because of his revealed back story.
ā€¢ Iā€™m sick of books using ā€œtortured tragic male with horrifying backstoryā€ as a main leading plot device.
