The Dorothy Martin character was mentioned in another series I read (Penny Brannington) and remembered this book and gave it a try. Not sure what to think of it. On one hand, I liked the characters well enough and it was an intriguing plot. On the other hand, the writing was a little...overstated at times. The choice of wording had me rolling my eyes in a few places, and he utterly ridiculous ending was nearly too much to bear. Still, it has some charm to it, and if I ever stumble across the next book in the series, I'll give it a try, but I'm not bang on board with it just yet.

I enjoyed this little story although the lingo was difficult for me. When I first started reading the power had gone out so I couldn't google all the new church terminology. I didn't realize until the end that it was explained there. Still, I would read more of this series. I love the character of Dorothy Martin, lover of hats and cats and unraveling mysteries. I'm also eager to learn how things unfold between her and the chief constable.

A little too twee for my tastes, and the mystery wasn't really very mysterious.

Cozy mystery by an American author with an amateur sleuth set in a small English village at Christmas. Mostly pleasant, undemanding fluff, but I had the villain pegged by the second chapter, and the protagonist seemed incredibly obtuse about it. I liked that the protagonist was an older woman, and that she was conflicted about having made a drastic move (from America to the UK) late in her life. I didn't like that the author drew out a thin plot by making her protagonist incompetent. The conclusion was not satisfying.
When she does finally figure the mystery out, she doesn't tell the police. Instead, she goes and puts herself in danger. Smart move there.
