This…..barely qualifies as a horror book in my mind. Sure, the entire thing takes place in an old supposedly haunted house but most of it is inner dialogue of the main character and actual conversation with his BFF. I can’t help but think “This was written by a man” might explain it best to any other women readers considering it.

There was very little buildup for suspense. I think the author was going for “jump scares” but I’m not sure that translates in writing?

One of the best haunted house books I’ve read in a long time. It was quite predictable, but that’s what I love about these reads!

I adore a classic haunted house novel. There were many of the elements I love here, but they didn't go to the lengths I hoped they would. The twist at the end was too jarring, and didn't have enough evidence to be believable for me. It felt like the author was trying to jump-scare the reader with a plot twist rather than intricately weaving the truth into the story to come together just when he meant it to. A bummer, truly. I'd be willing to try from this author again. There was something here that spoke to me, I'm just not yet sure what it was.
