Deeply human, well written and thoroughly researched study. Certainly depressing and full of human brutality and horror and hatred and anti-Semitism, but just as full of resilience and bonds of love and loyalty and hope. Not just about Auschwitz itself, thorough treatment of the women's lives pre-war and what happened to the survivors afterwards. An interesting perspective on survivor's guilt and what people do to survive and protect others, and complicity, and the moments of compassion even from the most surprising of places. Doesn't turn the Nazis into inhuman monsters, but looks at them and the horrible things they did as human beings, with vices and virtues like the rest of us, that stands out as a warning to us as we vow and hope that we *can* make "Never Again" more reality than dream. Highly recommend, but it's a rough read.
