I can see why this went into the did-not-finish pile for a lot of people. Almost did for me too glad I stuck it out. Worth finishing for sure.

I didn't even realize I was chapter 4. Outside of someone being named hunter and the fact he learned how to fix a mower I can't tell you anything else about whats happening.

Thank you to libro.fm for providing me with an ALC of this book.

I absolutely loved the fact that this was narrated by Norman Reedus, and honestly could listen to his voice in my ear all day long. As for the book itself? That was a different story.

It wasn't bad, not by any means, but it just wasn't really a good fit for me. It centers around three very different individuals, as they travel to try to find their next steps. I think the characters were well-drawn, although I struggled to really connect with any of them. And I found that Jack's storyline was the most hard to believe as real experiences, while I could see the other two actually happening more easily.

The story is littered with similes, constantly throwing them around, even when they didn't need to be. It made it difficult to focus on things, and stay in the story.

Overall, this wasn't a read that I regret, mostly because I loved hearing Reedus's narration, but it wasn't the kind of book that I found mind-blowing or memorable in any way.

Edit 7/15/22:
The more I think about it, the more I really hate Paul's story. He said not once, but twice, that he wants to help this nice family that is
Spoilerusing him for slave labor
Spoiler. Then at the end of his story he
Spoilertakes off
Spoiler. How is he supposed to help anyone that way.

Technically the writing is good despite the helium balloon line. There were a couple of typos that editors didn’t catch.

I don’t understand how all of these stories connect, because they don’t. Three separate books could have been written. Then maybe they could have had proper endings.
I would have rather have read a complete story on Hunter, and a separate book with Anne's story. Throw Paul in the garbage where he belongs.

I love Norman Reedus, so I was excited to check out his debut novel. The Ravaged follows three people, each with different circumstances and backgrounds who are forced into new circumstances and must adapt. Hunter is a bit rough around the edges but has a heart of gold, he's traveling cross country after the death of his father. Jack is an accomplished businessman realizing he's missed out on spending time with his family, he ends up in South America with a totally different crowd than he has ever associated with. Ann is escaping an abusive home life and ends up living on the rails trying to find where she belongs.

I was definitely entertained by these stories but you could definitely tell this was a debut novel. It needed a little bit of refinement, at times the "grittiness" seemed like a real grasp. I wanted the throughline to be a bit stronger although I think I got what he was aiming for. I'm glad I did it on audio where Norman read it himself, I think that helped me as I struggled with sections.

Thanks to LibroFM for access to this novel via their ALC program. All opinions above are my own.
