I just reread this book for a book club and am so glad I did. When it comes to Christie novels, I'm always been more of a Poirot fan than a Miss Marple fan. In reading some of the Miss Marple books again, I've gotten a new appreciation for these stories. I knew she was clever, but had forgotten what a wonderful sense of humor Jane Marple has. She is able to work through several suspects to get to the truth and anticipated plot turns I never saw coming. I really enjoyed this book.

A really enjoyable Miss Marple novel and one that often ends up being dramatised for television because of it's unexpectedness and eventually simple solution. The uncertainty at the beginning, was someone murdered, which train were they on etc., plays on a common question of what do you do if you think you've seen a crime committed but you're not certain? Christie uses Miss Marple's age well, playing on the stereotype of a dotty older lady in order to lure in the culprits and find out things indirectly. Yet Miss Marple's shrewdness and practical nature come through, throughout the novel. Highly entertaining crime writing.

Mrs McGillicuddy is the sole witness to a murder being committed on a train moving in parallel to her own. However, with no body turning up and no evidence to indicate that a murder did in fact take place, no one believes Mrs McGillicuddy. No one, that is, except for her good friend Miss Marple...

While Miss Marple generally seems to stick more to the background of the story, she did feature more in this one. And Lucy Eyelesbarrow was a brilliant addition. With clues popping up everywhere, I turned my suspicious eye upon each character in turn, all except the actual guilty party. I don't want to say too much about the story except that it's probably my favourite Miss Marple so far.

I read a book recently that really shook me up so I desperately needed to read something to restore my faith in literature so I went for a good old Agatha Christie. Oh good grief I love her books so much.... How can books involving murder be so good for the soul????? I don't know, but a spoon full of Miss Marple is like soup for the soul.

❓I listened to the audio of this read by Emilia Fox and it just added to the quintessentially delightful Britishness of the whole experience. I have read many Christie novels but I hadn't read this one before, Id seen an adaptation years ago but fortunately completely forgot who the murderer was
