Review from 2017
3.5 stars. I can't quite give it a 4 but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Review the 2nd time reading it in 2022
That awkward moment when a friend suggests a book for book club that you just know you haven’t read, so you don’t check GoodReads, only to find out later that it was published under another title too—that you had read. 💀
Good news for my book club though! I did not remember anything after the first 25%. 😎
When Mrs. McGillicuddy sees a man strangle a women as her train comes parallel to his, she reports it to the next train station and the police. She also tells her friend Miss Marple who she’s visiting, and they try to figure out what happened to the woman’s body. On a hunch, Miss Marple arranges for a friend to pose as a housekeeper on an estate to find the body and the murderer.
Apparently the first 25% was quite impressionable because that’s all I remembered. I also had a name, but it turns out that person was NOT the murderer. It’s an interesting tale, but I do think it lagged a bit in the middle. The beginning was so exciting that the slowed pace wasn’t appreciated.
Either way, Christie stumped me again—even though I’d already read it before. 😂 She’s the queen of mystery.

I decided that today I would pamper myself by listening to Agatha Christie and crocheting because, after all, those things go together like chocolate and peanut butter, except that cozy mysteries and yarn have more fiber and fewer calories. (And yes, I see you standing in the back, waving your hands excitedly and screaming "I DON'T LIKE CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT BUTTER! I'M ALLERGIC!", but we were talking about Agatha Christie here. Don't be a jerk. Don't make it about you.) I was particularly excited to start this one because the title is fabulous. Why? I have no idea, except that every time I hear it I get a shiver of excitement, because it's evident that someone is starting out on a journey. Why is this journey significant enough to be the title of the book? What will they do? What will they see? WILL IT BE THEIR LAST?
Then, as I listened, the stakes kept getting higher and higher, and the suspect list shorter and yet more complicated at the same time. This is true Christie form, as was the ending that shocked me. (That last bit sounds like high praise, but it's really not. I've been watching NCIS for years and I'm still always surprised when some "fringe witness" that they interview turns out to be the killer.) I enjoyed every minute, and had a hard time tearing myself away to do normal things like cleaning (not surprising) and eating (rather surprising, because not much keeps me from food).
Soooo.... Ummmm… Yeah, all that to say I just binge-listened to this eight-hour audiobook. Do I have regrets? Not at all. I mean, who needs sleep? Who can sleep when there's a murder to be solved? Plus, it was a fabulous journey. I don't know when I'll have time to hop on the Miss Marple train again, but I hope it's soon!

CRÍTICA BILINGUE / BILINGUAL REVIEW (🇬🇧 & 🇵🇹)
🇬🇧 The original Girl on a Train was Mrs. McGillicuddy.
This one was so much fun! I found there was a lot of humor, what with making fun of assumptions and stereotypes. Quite cheeky.
Also, is it me, or are Miss Marple's novels very susceptible to a romance minor subplot on the side?
The murder idea was interesting and creative, and I liked the setting.
I find that Miss Marple's novels are the simplest in motivation, while Poirot gets the complicated ones. Many are still basic motives, though the murder's conception is complex.
Like always, most characters have little to recommend them, and they're pretty flat. But it's way easier to like some if Miss Marple is involved. Lucy is an interesting and likeable character, but I can't imagine someone like her exist. Who would spend so much money in college to willingly become a house help freelancer? That's a risky move.

I loved that Miss Marple was in this from the beginning! What a good story.
