I love smile, but I love sisters even more. It is such a good depiction of sisters growing up together, it reminds me of my own sister. It’s just a fun little entertaining story.

Re-read 2024: OHHHH, I needed this. Yes. After the negativity and toxicity of Jawbreaker I needed this one. This wasn't always the easiest one to read because of all the arguments, but it was also so fun to read because not just getting to see the roadtrip but also see the past and how Amara (and later Will) were born and how Raina reacted to it. There were lots of great moments and while being in a car for a week doesn't seem like a good idea for my carsickness, I would just love to be part of it.

--------

Reread 2020: After reading Smile yesterday I just had to reread this one as well! And boy I had fun reading it though Amara was a tad annoying. Plus, I did feel sorry that the parents couldn't afford a new home and had to sleep in the living room. The road trip was fun well at least in the way that they saw new places and all that, while I get carsick I would love to do all that, OK I would have to live in the US as that is apparently road trip central. The ending had me laughing.
All in all, great graphic novel once again!
_______

So yesterday I was in a re-read mood (still am, but less), and wanted to read Smile. Then I couldn't find Smile, and since it was 2.30am I just didn't have it in me to check further, so I just grabbed Sisters. :)

This was just as fun as I remembered, back when I first read it in 2014, the only thing I didn't particularly like was the fact that the sisters kept fighting, and that I had a big annoyance towards the youngest sister. I kept wondering if she was really her age, or just a baby.

But other than that, I enjoyed everything. The road trip (I just love books with road trips in them as that means I get to see the country a bit more), the flashbacks to how Raina got her sister, her brother, and how her dad got laid off from work, how everything came together what it is now. I love that she picked this format, didn't go for all flashbacks in the beginning, but instead just spread them throughout the book. Luckily you could easily see it when a flashback happened (different page colours + characters look younger).

I did feel for Raina, but also her parents, and her siblings. There just wasn't any room for the kids any more. Nor for the parents. Raina did get her own room, but that was at the cost of her parents having to sleep in the living room.

Raina Telgemeier's art is as much fun as it always is. She has a really nice style. :)

What more? Mm, not much. I did love what happened near the end when the sisters were stuck on the side of the road. :P Poor Raina.

The ending was quite sad, for the mom, but also for the kids. I saw it coming from far though. You could just see it.

All in all, I would recommend this book to everyone.

Another great graphic memoir by Raina Telgemeier. This is a story about a road trip she took with her mom and siblings when she was fourteen and her tumultuous relationship with her sister growing up.
