Hurray for trans youth. Boo for this book.
The author of this book knew nothing about transness until she was "inspired" to work on this book, and it shows. As if we, as trans folk, are the objects of a safari ride for cis peoples' pleasure. These folks are young, and their pictures and stories are now public in a way they can never take back.
Kuklin took photographs of youth early in their transition, turning the lengthy process of self discovery into a snapshot. She made a lot of money and name off the stories of young people hungering to be accepted. she interviewed them orally, then transcribed their words interspersed with her written commentary, with the effect that she appears clearer and more thoughtful, with time to edit her words. Not to mention that the effect is that she interrupts and speaks over them.
And this isn't "groundbreaking". Mariette Pathy Allen did the same thing a decade ago with The Gender Frontier - ooooh, photos of trans people to be "fascinated" by. Oooh. Get off the shelf and make room for fantastic books from within community.

I really wanted to love this book-maybe I'm too old and don't speak their language, but as someone who has known and been friends with transwomen and transitioning men and women, this book felt like it was slapped together too fast. It will probably help reassure trans kids they are not alone and reinforce some of their feelings and experiences. I wanted to get to know these kids better.
Really great for anyone who is looking to hear more about the transgender experience from the voices of people who are actually transgender.

I am glad that this book gives a platform for diverse voices within the transgender community. Every story is different, every story is important.
I had to put this book down after reading the first story. As I have seen in other reviews, this book is not something that is super enjoyable to read as a trans person. This book is extremely Trans 101 and has some problematic parts within the first 20 pages. I had absolutely no desire to finish it as I was left with a gross feeling when I read the first story.
