Another reread of this, about 20 years after my first. Always a classic.

FANTASTIC book! I don’t understand how it’s not more popular in mainstream books/media. All of the play on words and witty ideas were just brilliant. A lighthearted read that I will definitely be re-reading.

Note to self: I read this book solely on audiobook (I’m glad I did because the language flowed very smoothly in the oral manner)

If any of you are looking for books that will instill wonder and linguistic curiosity in your children, don't look any further; The Phantom Tollbooth will do the trick.
As far as children's books go, this one is perfect in every way. It is extremely subtle, clever, whimsical and intellectually stimulating. My only regret is that I wish I had read it as a kid - The Phantom Tollbooth is one of those books that "trick" children into learning many, many things without them realizing it, thanks to Norton Juster's fascinating, fun narrative and incredible characters - Chroma the Great and the color orchestra were by far the most poetic and spellbinding characters in the book in my opinion.
All in all, a superb read - strongly recommended to the young and old.

For annotating this book, my tabs were:
  • Light Blue: Funny
  • Teal: Nostalgic
  • Navy Blue: Life Lesson

I grew up loving the animated film adaptation to this book (The Phantom Tollbooth, 1970 film)!! So I decided to pick it up and read it as an ode to my childhood. It's got a colorful way of teaching a child some of life's biggest lessons like: the importance of grammar, how using critical thinking can help you solve problems, the importance of choosing your words carefully, beware of mundane time-wasters, and remember that your perspective will change as you grow. My favorite quote was on page 77 which said
"It is no more important to count the sands than it is to name the stars. Therefore, let both kingdoms live in peace."
This is the perfect book for kids to read in school. I highly recommend the movie!!
