I liked this one quite a bit. It’s inspiring me to read more of the Lord John books. A little bit adventure, a little bit of historical color, some great characters, a famous (?) battle, the ugliness of war, a peek into Lord John’s dalliances and affairs, and touching on legacy and responsibility with a depth of feeling. It’s not a long or big story, but a little window into one of his adventures and in only the way Diana could write it.
P.S. Some of this book will be confusing even if you have read some of the Outlander series. It’s more of a slice of one year with a lot of little things happening. And there’s references to LJ’s backstory, family history, and one to Jamie Fraser that have nothing really to do with the story in this book. I had to just go with it and trust I would figure it out later, or not. I still enjoyed it.

Lord John is one my favorite characters in the Outlander series. I love these books for their small glimpse into the ridiculous and fun things John gets into in his daily life. I love his companionship with Tom Bird. He is like a little brother to John. It's so funny when he gives him grief about ruining his clothes so often. He is always reading to step in and protect John's character.
Why is Lord John constantly involved in murder mysteries or missing people inquiries? Makes for an intriguing set of stories.
