I wish I had known how much violence is described in this book. many people recommended it, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. So this as a first off - there is in-detail description of physical and mental abuse, of accidents, injuries and the like.
That said: I do think it was great to read the Story of Tara Westovers life, to get an insight into Mormon culture (not to say that I believe Mormon culture is what it is in this family) and how she managed to get out of an abusive and neglecting family and managed to get herself formal education. Still, to me it was incredibly painful to read this (side note: not in a good mental place atm, which has influenced my perception), at points I really had to stop. And all the descriptions of violence and abuse were much more present to me than the parts about how she got out of there...I don't know. I don't think I would want to read it again.

Wow was this interesting. It’s honestly scary that there are people like this out there. I feel so bad for everyone involved because they all need some type of help. I would highly recommend this. I do have to say it wasn’t what I was expecting. All the reviews I heard didn’t say anything about the physical and emotional abuse so I was a little shocked.

This book is unbelievable.
It is nonfiction that is stranger than fiction.

Tara’s backstory is so heartbreaking and a powerful story of enlightenment and the strength that lies in knowledge and curiosity.

The recklessness of her family struck me multiple times, and showed me again in what privileged environment I grew up in.

The writing is fantastic! The audiobook is so gripping, but this story is riddled with trauma, abuse, and injury, so while it can be described as shocking, I’d rather not editorialize. The truth of this book is that it is a powerful story, expert;y written and told, and the content itself, speaks for itself. While there is much to look into about this book, it also knows it’s own voice and limitations, and chooses to focus solely on its themes and the emotions felt which ultimately grant it more impact. Id love to hear more from this author, perhaps a few essays.
