Brutality in the name of a righteous god who only commands through men.

This book did an excellent job of showing the experience of religious trauma and domestic abuse. I have personally experienced domestic violence and abuse; not in the same way as this writer but I do find myself relating heavily to her. The truth is that when someone is abusive. Often times they are coddled and enabled by their loved ones (parents, spouse, etc.) and when the author tried to speak out about the abuse from her brother (that of which was witnessed by her mother) she was made out to be crazy for accusing him, even by her other sister who knew it to be true and had experienced it herself. This is the harsh truth of the dynamic between abuser and their victims and their enablers. It’s a relationship of control, fear, gaslighting, and disassociation. And often times we don’t realize how bad it was until we have left the situation. I also understand the feeling of being a first generation college student who came from an abusive home, diagnosis my parents from a textbook years later.

This was such a gripping story. Difficult to read the subject matter at times but it kept you invested and hoping things will turn out better.

Tough listen but such an important topic. First party character, driven telling the story of a woman, slowly realizing what her life means.

Philosophy meets memoir meets coming of age. I really loved this one, although some parts were difficult for me to understand and could have used more description. It was somehow both cerebral and tangible at the same time. There are many things to be aware of in terms of content.
