Absolutely harrowing. I'm floored. The terrifying lows this woman has experienced and the peaks which she has climbed in spite of it. Stunning.

This book is a gut punch. It's the story of a woman overcoming the neglect of a difficult childhood, the physical abuse of an older brother, and the crushing silence of a family who chose to look the other way, and Westover recounts it all with such clarity, authenticity and compassion, that it's hard not to be overwhelmed. I read this book really quickly, and it helped get me out of a reading slump. A great read for people wanted to think deeply about the damange our families can do to us, and the ways in which we can learn to understand and live despite that damage.

I was blown away by this memoir and Tara’s incredible journey. At the beginning, I thought that this book would mostly be about her issues with her family, and while that is a major part of this book, it was also interesting that she spends so much of it talking about how deeply she loved her family. Families are challenging, no matter the circumstances.
