An interesting story, but the writing felt uneven. I’m told this improves over the next couple of books in this series so I’ll try the next one!

This wasn’t anything revolutionary, but it was a really fun adventure nonetheless. The tropes were familiar and predictable, and the main character miraculously escaped from seemingly deadly circumstances so many times that I never really believed the stakes of the story were high (even though they were clearly meant to be). That being said, I think that’s actually what I liked about this book. There’s something about it that just felt so comforting and nostalgic, and for that alone it was worth the read.

This book took me a while to get into. I almost gave up, but I'm glad I stuck it out because the latter 2/3 ended up being a lot more fun. I would definitely consider this a YA book, which I didn't know going in, so it would have helped me calibrate my reader expectations. Also it's an older book, so I had to keep reminding myself that the things it reminded me of were actually *later* books. This definitely has the feel of a 90s book, which isn't a bad thing but took me some time to get used to. I ended up enjoying the book as a light read and think I'll continue the series now that I have the feel for it.

When I say this book is average, I don't mean to say it is bad. It was good. The writing didn't stand out in any way. I liked the characters and world building enough to keep reading.
