Did you know that Nnedi Okorafor has written a comic about aliens (the space kind) & immigration? With an adorable sentient plant character? And protest humor? Now you do.

Quick enjoyable read. Not as engaging as author's other works imo.

I love how fresh this story is. Also, let's hear it for amazing black pregnant woman being the lead of this story! For anyone spiritual who gives reverence to nature and plants, I would recommend trying this book.

I read this while in-between Okorafor's first and second Binti books, which was an okay thing to do but it did illuminate to me the common thread in both this book and the Binti series wherein extraterrestrial life first makes contact in Nigeria. I really like this concept because it's the first time I've encountered this idea that not only does alien life make first contact in an African country, but it's also to the benefit of Nigeria and the rest of Africa. I like this vision. Also, the aliens are really nice.

That said, the pacing of this book seemed off for me. I will eventually go back and read it, but it was almost like a telenovella in how characters make these dramatic, impulsive decisions about their relationships and then those decisions are recanted in equally dramatic fashion. I guess it was more about the concept of interstellar immigration - and really, the shitty immigration policies of the United States - than deeper character development.

The art overall was okay, but I really enjoyed the character designs and concepts. It was some of the most original stuff I've seen since Fiona Staples' art in Saga.

I really enjoyed this!! I continue to stand by the use of the graphic novel medium as a way to disseminate knowledge and advance political education. Some parts were on the nose but I still think it was done well!
