i think i made a mistake reading that book after the brothers karamazov but i am too fascinated with dostoevsky's dialogue for it to really impact my rating

Cutting off a couple chapters would’ve made it much more interesting to read. Lots of repetitive dialogue and just dull prose. I did really enjoy Svidrigailov’s character arc though.
Bawdry, increasingly elaborate insult-offs lovingly interleaved with the searing pain of loneliness's feeble aspirations for "saving" another, it is impossible to not fall in love with Dostoevsky's sprawling cast of vicious gossips and hopeless romantics.
There are two scenes that really stand out to me. The omniscient narrator perfectly relays the observational humor and quickening pace of Katerina Ivanovna and Amalia Ivanovna's explosive confrontation, which ultimately is rather incidental to Raskolnikov's philosophical war but is outrageously entertaining. This scene is in tough competition with the absolutely delightful Porfiry Petrovich's battle of wits with Raskolnikov, which has a similar amount of outrageous humor and genuine emotion. This is what I love so much about Crime and Punishment, it has an ambitious vision for exploring the psyche of its cast, but it is also consistently funny and witty, and that sharp balance helps each emotion stand out all the more when it is given full spotlight.
Sure, the extreme, somewhat simple sainthood of Avdotya and Sonya can be a little hard to stomach, and Katerina and Alexandrovna's "hysterical notions of motherhood" can blend together, in that the interiority of the women never seems to achieve the long waxing of the men. But Dostoevsky so clearly captures St. Petersburg's bustle and malaise, so methodically sketches out Raskolnikov's frantic contradictions and search for meaning, so uproariously depicts interpersonal confrontation and longing, it's clear he is simply in the haven a great artist can carve their etch upon: the human heart in conflict with itself. And that is almost always a great recipe for sobering, grounding, dream-roiling page-turner.

Por un tiempo tuve un problema con Dostoievski. Muchos críticos y escritores han dicho que este hombre es el más grande conocedor del alma humana de todos los tiempos, que un puñado de sus novelas podrían considerarse de las mejores piezas narrativas del canon occidental. En fin, el año pasado descubrí la literatura rusa y comencé a leer todo lo que caía en mis manos. Además, entré a un curso de ruso en la universidad. La profesora (rusa nativa) me pidió que expusiera en clase sobre Dostoievski, y yo accedí. Pero sabía que para poder hablar de él, tenía que leer su obra cumbre (o al menos eso me hice pensar en ese momento). Comencé a leer "Crimen y castigo" hace cinco meses, y apenas hoy la termino, satisfecho y con lágrimas en los ojos. Nunca pensé que ese autor al que yo llegué a ningunear en mi juventud me haría sentir tan extraordinariamente humano y vulnerable como lo hizo esta novela.
Entiendo por qué se piensa en Dostoievski como el más grande conocedor del alma humana: todos sus personajes están marcados por la angustia existencial de vivir y de sufrir, de ver morir a la gente que se ama y de hacer daño sin querer al prójimo. Todos viven bajo la marca de un pecado original que los consume o los redime. Toda la novela está atravesada por ese conflicto, el de no hallar un lugar en un universo sin dios y con el pulso de un alma volátil como única regla verdadera.
En fin, toda esta palabrería es insuficiente para expresar lo mucho que me gustó esta novela. No puedo recomendar más su lectura (preferentemente, su lectura íntegra, pues existen muchas ediciones recortadas). Yo mismo me sorprendí de lo sencillo que es leer a Dostoievski, es un escritor con ideas geniales expresadas en un estilo muy sencillo, todas las historias se hilan de una forma tan magistral que es difícil perderse si uno pone atención. Al menos yo sentí que las más de novecientas páginas que la componen me resultaron mucho más ligeras que algunas novelas contemporáneas.
