A solid 4-star book. Keeps you engaged 100% throughout the book. Emphasised with the main character’s emotions but not with his motives or views on life. As an Eastern European I enjoyed the literal translation by P&V.

A few months ago, I saw crime and punishment on Umi's shelf and asked oh have you read that and she said not yet. But naturally because my friend is very smart and I want to be on her level I was like lemme keep this in my mind. Then this summer I was like hmmm what's a difficult classic so I can really challenge myself, and a lot of people said crime and punishment. my dad also told me he read it when he was in uni so naturally I wanted to also get on his level. Anyway I thought I'd struggle reading this but I actually finished it in like 4 days, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I think people struggle with this because holy mother of yap. but honestly dostoyevsky writes stories the same way I tell them (aka it takes him a while to get to the point) but I enjoyed it lol like who doesn't love like 20 pages of backstory. He also does this thing where for like 50 pages he'll refer to a character by their government name and then like halfway through the book start referring to them as their nickname, and also all these Russian mfks names are hella similar so sometimes I was like whois this????. The story itself is very interesting and delves into like the concept of guilt and morality when crimes are committed and how ones own guilt can lead them to their own downfall. It's also quite funny at times, and Umi finally read it shortly after I did and we talked about which character we were and she said im NATASYA???. LITERALLY THE MOST IRRELEVANT CHARACTER. Anyway next summer I'm gonna force her to have our bookclub of 2 read the brothers karamazov.

me demoré en leerlo pero la verdad creo que es un libro que hay que leer así, de a poquito. de mis lecturas escolares favoritas y actuales también; me hizo recordar por qué con mis amigas lo relacionábamos un poco con death note jjjj

Certainly one of the most challenging books I’ve read. The depth at which you dive into each character’s mind and intentions can sometimes seem pointless but is ultimately crucial to the plot. I enjoyed the bits of political commentary and nihilist criticism that related to the time the book was written. I’d recommend this book to anyone who feels like they need a break from predictable/boring fiction. But not for anyone who has a short attention span or isn’t willing to do some sparknoting/googling to get the full understanding of what’s going on in every chapter and the symbolism behind it.
