This was my first time reading this classic and I'm glad I finally got around to it. It was slow in the beginning for me to get into, but really picks up about halfway through. I really liked the gothic elements in the story. This was a really good picture of the effects of evil on the soul, but the story does leave something to be desired. There's a part in the story where a character tries to lead Dorian down the path of repentance and forgiveness (though the critical point of sins being paid for is missing, despite the talk of God throughout the story), but Dorian utterly rejects it. He even at one point tries to undo his sins by "being good," but it doesn't work. Ultimately the story ends in tragedy, but I thought the ending made sense with the direction the character was heading in. Lord Henry's character and his influence over Dorian reminded me of the characters in cartoons that have an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Lord Henry was definitely the devil on Dorian's shoulder. Poor Basil was the angel that he ignored.
