Hippolytus is like the ultimate incel
Hippolytus and Theseus received forgiveness for the sins of the gods, yet Phaedra didn't 😮‍💨

It's classic mythology. You get what you expect. It's a good story and you can see its design in more modern works if you're looking.

She acted virtuously though she had no virtue, while I, having virtue, did not use it well. ~ Euripides

Plotting is particularly weak, but the poesy comes through nice and sharp.

I read this as a freshman in college, but I don’t remember it at all. I liked it—liked some of the themes and ideas, the flawed characters, and the questions it raises about when to speak up and when to keep silent. Overall, I’m glad I revisited it!

This isn't my favourite of the Ancient Greek plays I've read so far. The story line is less dramatic than those of Oedipus the King and Antigone, and the intervention of the gods on stage detracts from the feeling of mystery. The portrayal of the gods as having more human qualities is one of interest, however.
