Lol so finally finished this book a year later…but anyway, I really enjoyed this book. I’m not often drawn to these more “classic” books, but I am a fan of historical fiction which is why I initially decided to read it. I really enjoyed the depth at which each character was described. It was as though I felt like I knew where their actions would eventually lead them based on their personalities so vividly described throughout the story. Steinbeck’s writing creates such a vivid scene of the Salinas Valley, and of each space that the characters go. I feel like it is so rare to find such detailed writing these days. He spends so much time detailing everything, and I think that is what sets this book apart from others. I also always love a complex female character, although I wish there were more in this story. It was super interesting to read a story based around the complexities of father-son relationships, and how they can be detrimental in so many ways.
