Flirting with 40

K. Bromberg

4.1 AVERAGE

I loved K. Bromberg's "Flirting with 40," a cute, sweet, and funny story which featured endearing characters and an engaging plot that kept me turning the pages well past my bedtime. The flirty banter between main characters Blakely and Slade was a ton of fun, and I particularly appreciated Slade's efforts to help Blakely feel good about herself in the wake of a difficult divorce. My favorite part of this story was the way Blakely gradually regained her confidence, thanks in no small part to Slade's encouragement, and decided to go after what she wanted in her life and career.

I fell in love with Slade just as much as Blakely did; he has definitely earned himself a place on my list of best book boyfriends of all time! I appreciated how kind, caring, and protective he was, both as a doctor and as a friend/boyfriend. He genuinely wanted to help Blakely even though he barely knew her, and despite the fact that he was suspended from his residency, he couldn't help breaking the rules and checking in with the hospital because he wanted so badly to know how his patient was doing.

Overall, I read this entire book with a smile on my face, and I highly recommend "Flirting with 40" for all fans of contemporary romance and romantic comedy. I look forward to seeing what K. Bromberg writes next!

In true K. Bromberg fashion, this was a winner! but honestly, what do you expect from a romance writer of this caliber? I adored the writing and the chemistry between Blakeley and Slade, but it was the message that I loved the most. This book was empowering!

Blakeley is an unhappy. At almost 40 years old, she has lost her groove. She is recently divorced and after over 15 years of marriage, he is engaged to a much younger woman. At the job she has worked at for YEARS, her new younger boss hates her and clearly wants to fire her, but she has to go on this ridiculous team bonding retreat for a week in the mountains. So, she is sitting in a bar, wallowing, but wanting do wallow alone. When a man sits next to her and tries to talk to her, not getting the hint, she finally lays it all out there. But, when she turns to see the face of the man sitting next to her, she meets Slade. He is younger and absolutely gorgeous. So, why, she wonders, is he sitting there still talking to her? She sneaks out thinking that she just isn't good enough.

But, the next time they meet, he saves her from an awkward encounter with her ex and his new fiance. Sitting down for another drink, Slade and Blakeley write up some goals on a napkin. He will pretend to be her doting boyfriend and attend her bonding retreat with her as a buffer. He will help her realize how amazing she is and in return she will fall madly in love with him for real... But that part is just a joke right? He can't really want her, can he?

The retreat proves to be a learning experience for the both of them. While they learn about each other and the chemistry grows to a sizzling point, Blakeley slowly gains confidence with her co workers and decides to prove to her new boss that she isn't the enemy, but an asset that Heather will actually want around going further.

But, with all great romance novels, there are obstacles. In this one, the obstacles are not only in Blakeley's feelings of not being enough for this younger, amazing man, but Slade's demons in his own past. All in all, this was just so good! The women empowering women aspect was great!

⭐️1 STAR⭐️

I'm always looking for older women in my romances so I had not read the blurb prior starting this but knew it was an age gap romance between a young man —as pictured on cover— and a woman close to her forties—hence the title. I went in with little expectations, looking for a sexy and lighthearted read, though full disclosure, I started it trying to forget what the cover model looked like. Personally not a fan of the young puppy look of this dude, lol.

Sadly, early on reading Flirting With 40, I struggled to stay engaged. The heroine was constantly doubting herself and her fixation about the age difference between her and Slade was excessively mentioned for it to make me feel aggravated.

I wish older woman in age gap romance trope wouldn't come with chapters of insecurities though. It kinda ruins the whole appeal in this reverse trope to me that they need a man's actions to validate their worth. And when you learn that the age gap conflict which took SO MUCH space on the pages is only of 8 years... You just don't get it. *shrugs*

In the end, the contrived age gap conflict, the juvenile feel of the heroine's POV, the redundancy of her complaints made it hard for me to enjoy "Flirting With 40" for the lighthearted read it was meant to be. Add to this a dearth of chemistry (how can a guy with that much swag can bring no spice at all will remain a mystery) AND steam, this one fell flat for me and I decided to quit my losses around 70%. I've no doubt it ends with an HEA, with the heroine overgrowing her lack of confidence and any shortcomings thanks to her new man. Meh.

One last thought about the cover model: I've asked a few friends about it and none gave this dude a year over 25 years old. I think he looks 20 at most. Through the heroine's eyes, it feels like the hero is so much younger than her, so maybe it was meant to fit her portrayal of him? Either way, the cover model looking fresh out of highschool versus his age on the pages doesn't match and in my opinion is a disservice for the book.

It's okay.
Tbh I was a bit bored and skimmed to finish it.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
Age gap.
Hero is accused by his friends if being a man-whore.
He is super busy with his work so has little time for relationships. His friends say once the woman gets attached he moves on to the next one but leaves behind a queue of women in love with him.
No other woman drama.
Her ex is on the scene, engaged to someone else.
HEA.
Epilogue.

This is such a sweet and sexy romance! After reading the author's previous novel, Hard to Handle, I knew I would continue to read anything she writes. While this is definitely wasn't as angsty and emotional, it was still so good.

Slade Henderson and Blakely Foxx meet in a bar one night--a bar she's never ever been to and talked herself into going. She's had a bad day is ready to tell the guy off who has appeared next to her and starts talking. Until she turns and looks at him. Blakely can tell that she is older than him and leaves when her insecurities get the best of her. This is an age gap story, but not by crazy standards. She is 39 and he is 31.

Blakely is a divorcee and her ex has left her with a lot of emotional baggage and insecurities about herself and her life. To top that off, she has a co-worker at her work who she calls "Horrible Heather" who is basically trying to get Blakely to quit her job. Blakely has had enough.

With a work camp retreat coming up, Slade steps in as her "boyfriend." And, oh boy, Slade is the perfect book boyfriend. Confident, positive, sexy, says what he means and he is a cardiothoracic surgeon! He is also the perfect cheerleader for Blakely.

I loved that the main conflict was more about getting herself back(confidence) and learning to howl at the moon and less about the age difference. She has issues with it at first, but as the story progresses, it is mentioned less.

Thank you to Valentine PR and the author for a digital advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.

The beginning and the end

When I read books like this and All Grown Up by Vi Keeland, I'm given "hope" that maybe I'll find that guy after my divorce who is worth all the effort. Blakely Foxx is such a strong and smart woman, who developed insecurities because her shitty ex-husband was insecure in himself. Slade Henderson is that take charge good guy that most of us can never find. Circumstances throw these two together and it's such a great ride. With meddling moms, difficult co-workers, ride or die friends and crazy good sex. Slade helps Blake find herself again and in the process she falls head over heels in love. They both do, but they think it's the wrong time, but that's when the best things happen. Beautiful take of finding true love when you least expect it.

It hasn’t been Blakely’s day, week, month, or even her year. Her husband of seventeen years has replaced her with a woman half her age, and her younger boss hates her. It has undermined her confidence and made her question her abilities as she’s up for a career-making promotion. To blow off some steam, she goes to a trendy bar where she meets Slade. The hot, younger cardiothoracic surgeon takes an interest in her. Can she find her inner bada$$ to pursue her promotion and take a chance on Slade?

I think most of us can relate to Blakely. During her marriage, she put her husband first and molded herself to fit his needs. If she was honest with herself, their relationship wasn’t working long before they broke up. Between the demise of her marriage and her horrible boss, Blakely lost her sparkle. With encouragement from Slade and her best friend, I loved seeing Blakely put herself first and feel good about herself again.

I enjoyed how Blakely and Slade’s relationship develops. Slade is the right man for Blakely at the right time. Blakely’s quiet strength and confidence attract him to her. While Blakely doubts she still has it, Slade brings out her youthful and vibrant side. He helps her shine again. With Blakely at his side, Slade also gains a new perspective on his own issues.

Flirting With 40 is a delightful, feel-good read. Blakely and Slade’s antics and banter will make you laugh and smile while Blakely’s transformation will warm your heart.

I received an early copy of this book from the author. I volunteered to provide an honest, unbiased review.

I don't regret I read this. It was amazing and so sweet! Blakely is a great character and Slade is so swoon-worthy. The two of them together, hotness! Their chemistry and their banter is fun and steamy. I was really invested in their story and couldn’t wait to see how it ended.

This is really well-written, fun and light-hearted.
