Kinda skimmed the last like 20% of the book. I could see the ending coming a mile away. That’s not always a bad thing. I am usually an advocate for “predictable doesn’t mean boring”, but in this case, it did. Predictable doesn’t have to be uninteresting, and this was definitely that. It was fine in some places, but I found myself racing to finish it, instead of savoring it. I love when a book has you both pacing yourself, yet aching to know the rest. It’s painful and delicious. This was not that at all. Not horrible, just not great.

Flirting with 40 is a super cute and easy to read age gap romance filled with heart, many many swoons and dreamy sigh worthy banter. I really enjoyed this one. With its mix of great characters, fake dating hijinks and close proximity, I couldn't put it down.

Blakely is divorced, almost 40 and her boss is out to get her. One night as she drowns her sorrows in a too trendy bar, she meets the crazy sexy and young doctor Slade Henderson. Their chemistry is red hot from the start.

With her company retreat looming, Slade and Blakely come up with a plan to pretend to be a couple in order to win over her co-workers, her boss and to ensure she gets the promotions she was working so hard for.

Slade may be my favorite book boyfriend this year. My goodness! It doesn't get swoonier than the hot doc. I loved him so much. His heart and the way he champions and builds Blakely up will have you weak in knees in love. Even when his professional career is hanging in the balance his positivity never waned. He was legitimately a great guy.

As for Blakely, while I did like her, I do think she was a little too hung up on whatever shortcomings she thought she had. Yes, she's older, a divorceé and different from her co-workers...I wished she would have just owned it. I wanted more awesome, confident Blakely. Her insecurities got to a point where I couldn't root for her self sabotage. When we did get that carefree confident woman, she was a star.

This was such a fun read from K. Bromberg. I can pretty much guarantee you'll walk away with hearts in your eyes after reading.

Recently divorced and not looking forward to her companies "Team Building" adventure, Blakely finds herself burdening the man sitting next to her at the bar with her daily woes. Thinking he will just nod and walk away, she is surprised when the gorgeous man engages in conversation. But when he excuses himself to take a phone call and a younger woman asks if his mom a/k/a Blakely would give him her card, Blakely leaves the bar feeling worse than when she left. But Slade felt the spark and refuses to let her walk away. Instead they end up with a to do list that takes her from grumpy to satisfied. But is it all for the sake of her job? Or will the two go from friends to lovers to soulmates? Can you really find happiness at 40? In true K. Bromberg style, the reader instantly falls in love with the characters and cannot put the book down. From the opening pages to the very last line this book was filled with beautifully written characters, a heart warming storyline and just enough humor and emotion. Another great read from K. Bromberg.

Flirting With 40 by K. Bromberg
Narrated by Emma Wilder and Zachary Webber
Standalone Reverse Age Gap Rom Com
I listened to Flirting with 40 by K. Bromberg when it first came out. I enjoyed it so much, but finished it on a trip to see my son and by the time I got back, I just couldn’t catch up and write my review. But this book has been stuck in my head since September. It’s been bugging me that I didn’t tell enough people what an amazing book Flirting with 40 was. In fact, I felt like I couldn’t put together my Best of 2020 book list until I thought out my review on this one.

I’m in my early fifties and just got divorced after 29 years. I love reading about older women finding love again…brownie points if it’s with a hot young cardiothoracic surgeon!

Blakely is 39 and newly divorced after her husband left her for a much younger woman. Her confidence is down the tubes, and now Blakely has a new, very young boss who is out to get her.

Slade is a 31 year old cardiothocric surgeon on a sabbatical he doesn’t want. The two met in a bar, then he stepped in as her fake boyfriend in a humiliating moment with her ex, and suddenly, he’s on a corporate retreat with Blakely as her young, hot boyfriend. Much of this book took place at the retreat, and I really enjoyed it all! It was like a drama filled summer camp with mean girls. Slade was amazing and I loved how he helped Blakely take back her own self worth.

They’re only 8 years apart. I don’t think it’s much, but that may be because I’m 8 years younger than my ex. Sadly because it’s reversed, we really pay attention to the age gap. Blakely’s age is a big part of the story. Her boss doesn’t think she’s young and hip enough, her ex married a younger woman, and now she’s dating a younger man.
“You’re so damn hung up on your age, Blakely, but when I look at you? I just see you.”

I just loved how Slade helped Blakely find herself again. In fact, I think Flirting With 40 was as much about her personal growth as it was about the relationship. The workplace drama was a huge part of the story, and I would love to read more about some of the other coworkers.

Likes:

  • •Great banter.

  • •More than a romance novel.

  • •Older characters.

  • •Divorcee

  • •Unique storyline,

  • •Characters you love to hate.

Dislikes:

  • •The ending was a little abrupt.

The Narration:

Emma Wilder was amazing as always. Zachary Webber, who I normally love as a narrator, occasionally felt like he was just phoning it in, with no real emotion.

The Down & Dirty:

Flirting with 40 by K. Bromberg has stuck in my head. It’s hard to find a unique storyline nowadays, and with the amount of romcoms I read, they start to run together. But I listened to Flirting with 40 five months ago and I still feel like I remember it all, a rare feat. I’d love to see some spinoffs with the secondary characters!

Rating: 5 Stars, 4 Heat, 4 Narration

Everyone has there moments in life where they need encouragement to howl at the moon and K. Bromberg definitely showed how easily flawless it can be in this book. It helps if you have a Slade Henderson, obviously.

I loved every single thing about this book.

The storyline dove straight in with the meet and greet of Blakely and Slade, sending them on this crazy, spontaneous and steamy getaway to help build Blakely back up and make her the women she used to be pre-divorce. Her development throughout the book flows so effortlessly and highlights the highs and lows of finding your feet again after any breakup. The whole book was funny and flirtatious. I loved Slade and the age-gap trope, I think it really added to the whole story. I would have loved to have seen more with the working relationship between Blakely and Heather at the end but I could not fault that Epilogue at all. Urgh, my heart!

Feel Good Romance

Perfect low angst, feel good romance with depth. About age, work, play, being a woman and the choices we make for ourselves. Slade and Blakely are perfect together.

I wanted to love this because who doesn't love reverse age gap?! But sadly this misses the mark for me. The FMC is so insecure it's aggravating. I honestly don't get how this hot doctor dude would put up with all that. I didn't feel the chemistry between the two characters.
