Ruthless Gods

This book...this series... is perfection, IMO. The way the characters circle around each other strange and frustrating and flawed and so loveable all at the same time. Just perfect.

My heart hurts so I'm grateful for the break before the next book but at the same time I need it now!

“This was going to kill her. This, right here, this beautiful boy and his monstrous power and his lies and the knowledge that nothing mattered, they would always betray each other in the end.”

Let me start this off by saying HOW DARE YOU, EMILY A. DUNCAN?????? How freakin’ dare you make me feel so incredibly strongly for these sad, broken characters???? I CRIED ACTUAL TEARS. Few books have physically shattered my heart the way this one has, and they’re all on the “favourite books” shelf in my library??? Not sure how that works, but I guess we just love feeling things, even if those feelings hurt.
This book was an absolute trip. I was pulled in from the very beginning, the writing style and my love for the characters gripping me tight and not letting go until the end.
Being the middle book in what I’m assuming will be a trilogy, it has certain aspects that you would expect; things need to be explained, characters need to atone for what they did in the first one, feelings need to be addressed, and there’s just a whole lot of details. Very often the middle book tends to feel like a “filler,” where you just want the story to progress. But for Ruthless Gods, I felt like it was so necessary. Duncan has created such an elaborate and complex world, that if she had written it any other way I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much. Sure, there were parts that were a bit slow, but in my mind they were totally necessary because it perfectly fit the mood of the story, as well as the character development that was so important to the story.
Speaking of the mood, good GODS this book made you feel it from start to finish. The author has a mastery with the whole mood of the story, that you can physically feel the emotions and energies radiating off of the settings and characters.
For real though, this series is becoming one of my all-time favourites, and I will never stop singing it’s praises. Now the wait begins for the third book, which is actually okay... it’ll give my broken shattered heart some times to heal.
Everyone needs to read this series!!

*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free book.*

I wasn't a huge fan of "Wicked Saints" in the first place but I thought I might "Ruthless Gods" a shot to do better than the first installment. I didn't particularly like this sequel either. Maybe it was because I read book one a year ago, but I was confused 80% of the time, mixing up names, incidents and relationships. I also thought the balance between world-building, story and character development was off. But it might have been me, but I didn't really enjoy it and skim-read most of it after a while.

However, if you liked "Wicked Saints" (and that's really a taste thing!), you can continue the story shortly after the first one ended. I like the mythology and the idea with the Gods, but all the YA tropes were driving me crazy (super hot kissing, but damn he's also evil, I might want to fuck him but can I? Oh, well, interrupted, no problem) and this wasn't for me, I'm sad to say. (I like the dark edges of it though, but again the escalation of things could've been timed better.)

My heart aches and my head hasn’t quite wrapped itself around what it just read. This book was downright haunting and cerebral in so many ways and I loved every minute of it.
