i read this book to get me out of the extremely long reading slump i’ve found myself in and, although this experience was phenomenal, i’ve only gotten deeper.

i’ve spent the past three weeks collecting my thoughts and trying to come to a conclusion on what i think about this book. i bursted into tears near the end of the last chapter and a wide range of emotions were presented to me that just disappeared after i woke up the next morning (i finished it at 3 am).

however, it’s been 3 weeks and i just finally figured it all out. i loved this retelling. the author was able to confront the story and write it in a way no one else would’ve been able to do. i felt each character’s pain, heartbreak, grief, happiness and so much more. i wanted to hug patroclus and wrap him up in bubble wrap and tell him how amazing he is. i loved him so much because i saw myself in him and his character just felt so real. briseis and achilles were amazingly written although achilles was quite insufferable towards the end.

the book is overall 4.5 / 5 and i loved almost everything about it.

I barely finished reading this book. I muscled through it because everyone talks about how beautiful and sad the ending is. Patroclus as a narrator/character was only sometimes interesting. Achilles hardly redeeming or enjoyable by the end. This book could have been good, but the slow start, and even slower ending ruined the characters and the plot.
