What TJR has accomplished in this book and in her career is remarkable. She wrote an ambitious story that weaves several genres together, making this a book that appeals to a huge range of readers. She clearly did her research, and I get the sense that she told the story she wanted to tell. At the end of the day I am just so impressed.
This book incorporated so many themes and conflicts without feeling bloated or scattered. Writing about astronauts is brilliant because the stakes are so high. And because the main characters are two female astronauts who fall in love in the 1980s, the stakes are just as high on the ground as they are in space. Especially with the way the book incorporates its two main timelines, the entire thing is laced with suspense, drama, and tension even as you get to know the characters at the beginning.
Listening to this book, I found myself thinking about how TJR must be an excellent observer of humans and of life. Much like Daisy Jones, in particular, these characters feel so real that it's sometimes difficult to remember they are fictional. Their challenges, obstacles, conflicts, joys, and triumphs just feel so true to life - I'm not sure that I've encountered any other author who accomplishes this quite like TJR.
Even though I own a hardcover and I'm thrilled the book is on my shelves, I ended up listening to the audiobook, which was a great decision. Julia Whelan has her reputation for a reason, and Kristen DiMercurio was excellent too.
I could ramble on but I'll stop here. If you haven't read this yet, I highly recommend you give it a try!
P.S. Barbara is the worst.

Wish I was able to say more but I still have this knot in my chest. What a sublime read.
