There were some parts of this I really did like (the core love story was strong, both Joan and Vanessa were enjoyable and interesting characters, and
I'm eternally weak for a plane/space shuttle set assumed last conversation
), but the Frances/Barbara side-plot never felt all that believable. Frances didn't read like a convincing child to me (especially during the earlier parts of the book) and Barbara felt more like a plot device for Joan to react to than a fully realized character.

Overall, an unexpected read for me that I actually enjoyed a lot. Before now, I never realized that NASA had a requirement that pilots must be from the military, which inherently built sexism into their organization. Reading about women who are passionate and determined to follow their dreams is always powerfully impactful. I loved going on Joan's journey of self-worth by understanding who she is and standing up for what she believes family and love mean. Her relationship with Frances is beautiful and a family goal.

Two factors could have made this book stronger. The progression of time leading up to the events in the shuttle for Lydia and Vanessa is great, but inserting the beginning of Vanessa's time in space so early in the narrative detracts from the empathy given towards what transpires first during Vanessa's orbit. Characters should be more developed, first, to increase care in the reader. Also, the readers deserved an epilogue of what happened AFTER the last chapter's final moments.
