I think this book was really hindered by the fact that I associate space travel with really awful self centered people now. And in this era it was deeply rooted in American exceptionalism (which was briefly mentioned and dismissed in the book— honestly worse than not addressing it at all). It made it difficult for me to connect with the characters and root for them. But I loved the last bit so that earned it back a star.

I really wish they explained more of the astrophysics so I could keep up with it and appreciate the importance of it more. My eyes just ended up skim reading those sections cause it all meant nothing to me. Romance isn’t enough to carry a book imo but the context of this romance was interesting. I did love the relationship between Joan and Francis, don’t often see niece relationships explored. I wish Barbara had more nuance to her, she felt a bit 2D. Otherwise not a bad book.
